Nunney castle was built in 1373. Sir John Delamere was the tenant-chief of this royal property of Edward III.

The church was already in place and in a very good position in the village so Sir John Delamere chose to build Nunney castle in a low-lying position.

The French style of the castle was a result of Sir John serving in the French wars, he built a rectangle tall castle that had a drum style tower in each corner and apparently was roofed like a French chateau.

The towers even today are almost untouched.

It wasn't a castle that could withstand cannon fire, but was very suitable for repelling bows and crossbows.

The moat was among the deepest moats in England but had no portcullis.

The only serious duty of the castle was during the Civil War and it failed miserably.

The castle moat that is still in existence today, is still being fed by the little local stream.

The church of Nunney village in the background here, a very lovely rubbish bin and a sign that says TEAS IN CHURCH points you to the church in Nunney with an excellent view of  Nunney Castle
